WTTV-TV CW Indianapolis - United States Television

WTTV is a CW-affiliated television station in Bloomington, Indiana, serving Indianapolis, Indiana with local news and programming as well as CW programming. WTTV is owned by the Tribune Company. WTTV opened on November 11, 1949 as Indiana’s second television station. It has made the claim to being Indiana’s oldest ‘continuously operating’ television station. Throughout the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, WTTV was known in Central Indiana for its local programming, including children’s shows, late night horror movies presentations with “Sammy Terry,” a ghoulish vampire character portrayed by Bob Carter and local news and sports. The station was founded and owned by Sarkes Tarzian, a local radio manufacturer and broadcastert. In 1956, WTTV became an independent station after being dropped by ABC and NBC. Sarkes Tarzian sold WTTV to Teleco in September 1978, and it has changed hands several times since then, until in 1991, it was sold to River City Broadcasting, becoming a charter UPN affiliate in 1995. In 2002, Sinclair sold the station to Tribune. The station became an affiliate of The WB network in 1998, then in 2006, when The WB and UPN networks merged, the station came under the affliation of the new CW network. In August 2008, the station changed its branding from “CW 4” to “Indiana’s 4” for local branding purposes. On November 11, 2008, WTTV began celebrating its 60th year on the air.
