WIAT is a full service television station in Birmingham, Alabama, broadcasting on local digital UHF channel 30 and on virtual channel 42. Founded in 1965 as WBMG on analog channel 42, it is owned by New Vision Television, Inc. WIAT is affiliated with CBS, airing CBS’s primetime shows in the evening. In the morning, the station airs CBS’s morning news and information program, with spots for local news and weather; in the afternoon, it airs CBS’s soap operas; in the early evening, it shows CBS’s national news broadcast and local newscasts. After primetime, it airs its own local newscasts, followed by CBS’s late-night programming. WIAT also airs local sports programs and games. WIAT’s channel is multiplexed, with three subchannels. Channel 42.1 airs WIAT and CBS programs; 42.2 shows Untamed Sports TV, with outdoor and sports programs, including local games and sports shows, and 42.3 shows CBS 42 Weather. The station used the call sign WBMG from 1965 until 1998. From 1965 until 1970, the station showed some NBC programs as well as shows from CBS.
